Growing loneliness and increasing isolation among the elderly is an important issue in the Netherlands. Central to the design is a bridge across the lake, within walking distance from the homes of the elderly. The bridge invites people to start a conversation; a new kind of town square.

All passersby are led to one platform in the middle of the lake, the younger people often coming from the side of the beach and the elderly coming from the elderly homes at the other side of the lake.

From conversations with elderly people I learned there is less and less interconnection between generations. The elderly often are in social isolation and younger people are often in digital isolation.

The bridge brings the two generations closer together and provides a place where they can be of positive influence on each other.
